I’ll Love You Just the Same
When God gave me you,
I wondered what you would be like and who you would be.
But the future is something no eyes can see.
While what tomorrow holds, I can never know,
I can’t help but have hopes as I watch you grow.
I hope one day you’ll learn to speak,
to say brave things,
and to give a voice to the weak.
But even if you don’t,
and maybe you won’t,
I’ll still love you just the same.
I hope one day you’ll learn to run,
to run for fun, fast with your feet,
and to run to someone who is in need.
But even if you don’t,
and maybe you won’t,
I’ll still love you just the same.
I hope one day you’ll learn to listen,
to listen to the sound of the ones who love you the most,
to listen to God even when he doesn’t feel close.
But even if you don’t,
and maybe you won’t,
I’ll still love you just the same.
I hope one day you’ll learn to count,
to count to 10,
and to count on your friends.
But even if you don’t,
and maybe you won’t,
I’ll still love you just the same.
I hope one day you’ll learn to write,
to write poems that help people see what they can’t see with sight.
to write with words that bring light.
But even if you don’t,
and maybe you won’t,
I’ll still love you just the same.
I hope one day you’ll learn to build,
To build tools that make people's lives better,
To build bridges that keep people together.
But even if you don’t,
and maybe you won’t,
I’ll still love you just the same.
I hope one day you’ll learn to work
To work a job that serves others,
to work hard for your neighbors, sisters and brothers.
But even if you don’t,
and maybe you won’t,
I’ll still love you just the same.
I used to worry about you and wanted you to grow up fast,
Now I’m cherishing you as you for as long as it lasts.
And I’m clinging to a greater hope,
A living hope, certain and true.
It’s not in what you do, but in the God that created you.
And He says you don’t need to do anything to define your worth
You were valuable the moment you appeared on this earth.
God loved you from the beginning of time,
You were his before you were mine.
I’ll always have hope because you are His.
And when I’m not in control, I know He is.
So more than learning how to achieve riches or fame,
I hope you learn that our God is love and that He reigns.
But even if you don’t,
And maybe you won’t,
He will still love you just the same.
